Many users
of the broadband provided by Virgin Media were severely affected yesterday as
Virgin rolled out an update for their Hitron CGNv4 routers which are known to
have problems. Users with dynamic IP addresses were affected as soon as the
update was applied. The Hitron router is also known to have problems with
static IP addresses but this is not confirmed to be related to the current
situation.
Not all
customers were affected however as updates such as this are administered in
waves, so Virgin must have cancelled the roll out as soon as they were made
aware of the issue.
This router
problem however is in addition to a major outage which left many users unable
to connect for many hours yesterday. The problems started around lunchtime and
continued into the evening for many business customers. Home users however have
been safe from this outage.
Most of the
country has been affected and many business customers have complained that they
are losing money because of it. The cause of the outage may be due to an error with
the database that is used to authenticate users onto the network. As of today,
however Virgin Media seems to be fully up and running again.
